Why your phone might ring
Some Parrish residents may get a call this fall asking what they think of life in Manatee County. The county has launched its first Community Survey, with the University of South Florida conducting the research.
The interviews take about 15 minutes and cover quality of life, county services, community priorities and emerging issues. The announced survey period runs from early September through late October.
Participants are selected at random and contacted by phone. Not every household will receive an invitation.[1]
What happens after the calls
Results are expected in December. The county says it will post the findings on its survey page, and USF will present them to the Board of County Commissioners. Officials intend to repeat the survey annually so they can compare residents’ views over time.
For Parrish, the useful follow-up will be whether a concern turns into a specific response: a project, a service change or a clearer explanation of the trade-offs. A survey finding can help frame those decisions. It is not, by itself, a funding commitment or a construction timetable.[1]
You can speak up without an invitation
Residents also have a direct route into county meetings. The county’s public-comment page provides a form for submitting remarks in advance. Include your name and the comments you want entered into the public record.
If you prefer to speak in person, advance sign-up is optional. The county welcomes walk-in speakers and also has a sign-up kiosk on the administration building’s first floor. Its online speaker form opens 24 hours before a meeting and closes 10 minutes before the scheduled start.
Use the actual meeting agenda for the time and location. And keep the type of item in mind: the county requires comments on quasi-judicial items to be made under oath at the advertised hearing, rather than during the general Citizens’ Comments portion. The meeting notice and Agenda Management staff can help you find the correct place for your remarks.[2]
A Parrish decision to follow this week
There is already a local issue on this week’s calendar. The Planning Commission’s September 17 notice includes proposed changes to Parrish Lakes, including its housing mix, commercial space and buildout dates.
That meeting begins at 8 a.m. at the county administration building, 1112 Manatee Avenue West in Bradenton, with individual items heard as the agenda moves along. The Planning Commission is considering a recommendation to the county commissioners.
The fall survey and Thursday’s hearing serve different purposes. If your concern is about this particular proposal, its hearing process is the immediate place to follow and participate.[3]
