The purchase that spends its life on a shelf
There is a particular kind of home-project purchase that makes perfect sense for one Saturday and then spends years occupying garage space. Before adding another tool to that collection, Parrish residents have a borrowing option worth knowing about.
Rocky Bluff Library in Ellenton has a tool collection within Manatee County’s Library of Things. The branch’s information page says tools can be requested through the online catalog and transferred to a preferred library for pickup.
That last detail is the useful one for Parrish households. Learning about a collection housed in Ellenton does not necessarily mean making a special trip there for every loan. The catalog request is how to start finding out what is available and where to collect it.[1]
Who can borrow a tool?
The tool rules are narrower than the general library-card rules. Borrowers must be adult Manatee County residents, have a library card in good standing and provide photo identification. Nonresident cards, reciprocal borrowers and children are not eligible for tool checkout.
That matters if a household uses a library card issued through a neighboring system or assumes a child’s card will work for every collection. The specific tool policy controls this loan.
I’d start with the exact job, then look for the appropriate item in the catalog. A photograph of a drill or a general mention of repair kits is not a promise that a particular model is waiting on the shelf today. Borrowing works best when the reservation comes before the weekend project, especially if the project depends on that one item.[1]
How the loan fits into the bigger collection
Tools are one part of the county’s Library of Things. The system also lists items such as telescopes, musical instruments, binoculars, hotspots and literacy kits. It is a useful reminder that a library card can open up more than the book shelves.
The county says most Library of Things items circulate for three weeks. “Most” matters: the due date attached to the item you actually borrow is the date to use, rather than assuming every tool follows an identical loan period.
Returns go to a service desk at a Manatee County library. These items do not belong in the book drop. I’d keep the pieces together from the moment the kit comes home; it is much easier to return a complete set than to begin a search for one small attachment on the due date.[2]
