The overnight drive gets a work zone
Late-night drivers and early commuters have a work zone to account for on U.S. 301 this week. FDOT has scheduled intermittent single-lane closures at the railroad crossing just north of S.R. 62/Erie Road, with work hours of 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. through September 24, weather permitting.
The August 27 notice covers maintenance of railroad dynamic-envelope markings. It specifies one lane at a time and does not promise which nights crews will be at each crossing. It is a work window, rather than a report that the road is closed continuously.[1]
Why the paint beside the tracks matters
“Dynamic envelope” is a technical name for a very practical idea: a passing train needs room beyond the rails themselves. FDOT uses connected white X markings to show the area that drivers, cyclists and pedestrians need to keep clear. A vehicle can be off a rail and still be inside that clearance zone.
The markings are especially worth noticing when traffic ahead slows. An open space across the tracks is useful only if your entire vehicle can fit beyond the clearance area. FDOT’s crossing guidance specifically includes attached trailers when telling drivers to make sure they can clear a crossing completely.
For anyone hauling a boat or utility trailer, that is the detail I would keep in mind. The front of the truck reaching the other side does not mean the back of the trailer has cleared.
FDOT advises stopping behind the dynamic-envelope markings, never stopping on the tracks and never driving around lowered gates. The fresh paint is meant to make that waiting space easier to recognize.[2][3]
Two Palmetto crossings are on the same notice
The same overnight work window covers U.S. 41 just south of I-275 and 10th Street West at 5th Avenue West in Palmetto. FDOT advises allowing extra travel time or choosing another route.[1]
