A small escape, with lunch attached
Sometimes I want the date to feel like a little getaway without making the getaway a second job. Whiskey Joe’s on the Manatee River belongs on that list: waterfront dining in Ellenton, with a private stretch of white sand and indoor and outdoor spaces.
The appeal is easy to understand. A meal becomes the outing. You can build the afternoon around the water instead of assembling three reservations and a spreadsheet.
I’d treat this as a casual date-day pick. Give the meal a little room to stretch, choose the setting you want, and let someone else do the dishes. That last part remains undefeated.[1]
What I’d put on the table
I’d start with the crab-and-shrimp dip, listed at $16.99, then go for the mahi tacos. They are $23.99 for three, with chips and salsa; you choose grilled, blackened or fried fish, with slaw and a mango-pineapple topping.
My order would be blackened. The fruit salsa pulls me in that direction, and it keeps a seafood lunch from becoming an all-fried-food expedition.
For the person who hears “seafood restaurant” and immediately starts negotiating, the pork sandwich is $18.99. Its strawberry-guava barbecue sauce gives it a little more personality than the usual fallback burger.
Two taco plates and that shared dip come to $64.97 before drinks, tax and tip. Useful to know before a relaxed afternoon develops a less-relaxed bill.[2]
The weekday move
If your schedule has some wiggle room, I’d look at Island Hour. The Manatee River menu lists it Monday through Friday, 3–6 p.m.
The seafood dip drops to $12.99 in that window, and the American-style sliders are $10.99. Together, that is $23.98 before drinks, tax and tip. For me, that is the appetizer version of a date: order a couple of things, share, and leave the rest of the afternoon open.
It is also a different proposition from arriving on Sunday and expecting the weekday discounts. Pick the version of the outing you actually want: a full seafood meal, or a few shared plates by the river.[3]
Make it the right Whiskey Joe’s
Use the Ellenton location: 5313 19th Street East, telephone 941-263-3111. The current location page lists Sunday brunch from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday brunch from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and boat docks.
Reservations are available through the restaurant’s site. If a particular outdoor spot is the whole reason you are going, ask about seating when booking. Prices above are the posted menu prices checked September 13; specials and availability can change.
My vote: go when you have time for the view, not just enough time to finish the tacos.[4]
